Lay Eucharistic Ministries

More commonly known as chalice bearers, these lay people offer the chalice – “The Blood of Christ, the cup of salvation” – at communion. High school students share this ministry with adults.

Home Communion Ministers

Home Communion Ministers take communion from the Sunday Eucharist to the homebound. Their commissioning each Sunday – “Go forth with these holy gifts, so that those to whom you go may share with us in Christ’s body and blood,” reminding us all that “We who are many are one Body, because we all share one Bread, one Cup.”

Altar Guild Ministry

Members of the Altar Guild prepare the sanctuary for all liturgical celebrations, especially the Sunday Eucharist, but also weddings and funerals. This ministry’s responsibilities include cleaning altar linens and other utensils, arranging flowers, polishing silver and brass, trimming candles…. Four teams take one week a month, gathering on Saturday morning to prepare for Sunday services.

Acolyte Ministry

Children fourth grade through high school share this ministry of helping at the Eucharist by leading the choir and altar party in procession with crucifix and candles, by preparing and clearing the altar before and after communion, and by being of assistance in whatever way may be needed.

Lay Reader and Intercessors

Reading the Scripture lessons or prayers of the people is an easy way to become involved in the celebration of the Sunday Eucharist. Middle school and high school students share this ministry with adults.

Intercessory Prayer Ministry

On Tuesday mornings at 11:00 a small but faithful group meets for an hour or so to pray for those in need in the parish, the local community, and the world – a hidden treasure in our midst.

Newcomer’s Welcome Ministry

“Once I was a stranger and you welcomed me… whatever you do to the least of these you do to me.” The newcomer’s ministry welcomes those who are new to the parish with a loaf of bread, a tour of the building, and direction toward those people and ministries with which they are interested or in need of.

Parish Nurse Ministry

Penny Whiteside is our parish nurse and is more than happy to consult with those with health questions. She also is available after many Sunday services to check blood pressure.

What’s involved in being part of St. Matthew’s Church community?

Becoming part of St. Matthew’s Church community consists primarily of sharing in our weekly celebration of the Eucharist. Contributing something of your personal talent as well as financial resources also builds a sense of belonging to the Church, the Body of Christ. This giving of one’s self makes it possible for us to serve the needs of the world through the outreach and formation ministries that make up St. Matthew’s vision of “building community through Christ.”
