Information for Families
Welcome! Children of all ages are most welcome to attend the entire church service. We hope the information that follows will make you comfortable in bringing your whole family to St. Matthew’s on a Sunday morning soon.
Nursery
The nursery, located on the second floor, provides supervised care (by professional nannies) 9:30 am – noon for infants through 5 year olds every Sunday during the academic year. If you wish to have your nursery-age child with you during Communion, you are welcome come to the Nursery at the Offertory to collect him or her personally.
Children in Church
This our motto and our reality. Many children attend the Sunday Eucharist. Although the atrium time for younger children overlaps the 10:30 am service, children are always welcome to attend the entire service and are especially welcome to receive communion with their parents. The service is broadcast into the hallway if your child needs a brief break, and the back of church has ample room for toddler movement.
We are committed to the progressive involvement of children in the life of the Church. Children regularly serve as acolytes or lectors, and participate in service ministries such as food preparation for the Night Ministry.
The Children’s Table
To assist the children to gradually absorb the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and feel of the liturgy, there is a CHILDREN’S TABLE at the back of church, where the children choose from carefully selected coloring materials and books. Their confidence and joy as they gather their materials reveal a strong sense of belonging to the worshiping community.
Summertime – Lakefront Eucharist
Known as “ Beach Church ”, our summertime lakefront Eucharist is an inspirational, casual, and popular service held on the grass beneath the Grosse Pointe Lighthouse – overlooking Lake Michigan. (Bring your own lawn chair or blanket.) Beach Church is at 9:00 a.m. starting on the first Sunday in June and continuing each Sunday through Labor Day weekend. This lighthouse is immediately east of the intersection of Central and Sheridan, in Evanston. In the event of rain or a special lakefront event, services are held inside the Church at 9:00 a.m. – 2120 Lincoln , Evanston.
